Crew were fine, drinks and snacks were as well but we were delayed for around 2 hrs which made our entry into Mexico delayed as well with the influx of arrivals at the same time. Sort of wasted our first day of vacation. We left Pittsburgh at 630am and did not arrive in Mexico until late dinner time. Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno.

Roger's younger brother, Philip, has suffered under his father's preference for Roger, and retreated into a distant world of books and bygone historical epochs, spending all his waking hours in the library. Philip's wife Magda is an only moderately successful actress to whom everything, even a family murder, is a stage show in which she wants to play a leading part. His twelve-year-old sister Josephine, on the other hand, is ugly, precociously intelligent, and obsessed with detective stories. She spies continually on the rest of the household, letting everyone know that she is writing down her observations in a secret notebook. Three generations of the Leonides family live together under wealthy patriarch Aristide. His first wife Marcia died; her sister Edith has cared for the household since then.

He also made the first (and, surprisingly, only) dead-dog joke of the night. Washington’s annual mashup of political humor and earnest paeans to the free press is typically a good-natured collection of one-liners and affectionate jabs at friends and enemies alike. But it was the leading 2024 presidential contenders who loomed largest — one in the Washington Hilton hotel ballroom, the other who definitely, positively, probably was not watching from Mar-a-Lago. There are meta references to the framework that governs films, like when someone asks Jody if her Metalstorm characters should reference the trouble she's having in nailing the third act (in many ways reminiscent of The Fall Guy's sagging final act).

Josephine, who had been bragging that she knows the killer's identity, is found lying unconscious in the yard from a blow to the head from a marble doorstop. Charles discovers a cache of incriminating love letters from Brenda to Laurence, and the two are arrested. While they are in custody, the children's nanny dies after drinking a digitalis-laced cup of cocoa that had apparently been intended for Josephine. This over the top adaptation is not realistic, but it is great fun.

Trump Turns on R.F.K. Jr. Amid Concerns He Could Attract Republican Voters

The party soldiered on, reinforcing a commitment to the role of a free press in a democracy, and many breathed a not-so-discreet sigh of relief when the crowd resumed in 2022 after the worst of the pandemic with Biden carrying the torch. With such an enticing cast, it’s tougher than one might think trying to divine which of these eccentrics might be responsible for the crime, and “Crooked House” keeps you guessing, right up to its shocking conclusion (of which Christie was especially proud, naming it a personal favorite among her extensive oeuvre). It’s not just the revelation of who poisoned Aristide that surprises but also the way in which the film delivers justice to his killer. This particular mystery won’t be spawning sequels, but it arrives at just the right time to satisfy those whose appetite for a delicious Christie mystery are seeking a truly diabolical twist. In any case, we need something to keep our eyes and imaginations occupied while the director trots out his cast of suspects, and together with DP Sebastian Winterø, Paquet-Brenner takes these relatively bland characters and stages them at dramatic angles in these positively breathtaking rooms. Whereas so many of Christie’s books have gone straight to the small screen, this stunning visual treatment is enough to make “Crooked House” feel worthy of a theatrical run (although in fact, the film debuted weeks earlier on-demand in the States).

Rotten Tomatoes® Score

It starred Rory Kinnear (Charles Hayward), Anna Maxwell Martin (Sophia Leonides), and Phil Davis (Chief Insp. Taverner). The radio play was dramatised by Joy Wilkinson and directed by Sam Hoyle. The title refers to a nursery rhyme ("There Was a Crooked Man"), a common theme of the author. Narrator Charles's fiancée Sophia says it refers not to dishonesty, but rather "we hadn't been able to grow up independent... twisted and twining", meaning unhealthily interdependent on the intensely strong personality of the family patriarch, Aristide Leonides. He searches Edith's garden shed, and finds a bottle of cyanide; also Josephine's missing notebook, buried in quicklime. Taverner arrives to take over the case; he feels Charles's history with Sophia compromises him.

The discovery of love letters between Brenda and Laurence gives Taverner enough evidence to arrest them for Aristide's murder and the attempt on Josephine's life. Crooked House is a 2017 mystery film directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner, based on Agatha Christie’s 1949 novel of the same name. The film stars Max Irons, Terence Stamp, Glenn Close, Gillian Anderson, and Stefanie Martini.

They put off getting engaged until the end of the war when they will be reunited in England. You could read the film as a study of familial wealth and corruption, but it's happiest at a formal dinner where the insults - Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes is a screenwriter - have a snobbish sting. Like the audience, Charles is overwhelmed when he arrives at the Leonides estate, which seems positively palatial, with closets big enough for a cemetery of skeletons. Josephine hints that she has found clues, but will not disclose them.

He becomes a house guest at Three Gables, hoping that someone might reveal a clue at an unguarded moment. A private investigator helps a former flame solve the murder of her wealthy grandfather, who lived in a sprawling estate surrounded by his idiosyncratic family. Agatha Christie’s massive collection of novels and stories are largely evergreen properties because of their elegant, economical storytelling and their sense of intrigue. It’s no surprise that numerous adaptation of her work continue to be produced; though they flourish most frequently in the UK on radio and television, there are many notable feature film versions produced across the globe, including ones helmed by directors like Billy Wilder, Frank Tashlin, and Sidney Lumet. This year alone, Kenneth Branagh directed and starred in the fourth adaptation of Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” to great commercial success. Sophia Leonides, granddaughter of the late Greek business tycoon Aristide Leonides, visits private investigator Charles Hayward.

Explaining the News to Our Kids

Based on an Agatha Christie novel (reportedly one of her own favorites), this mystery is beautifully shot, with great set design, but it suffers from its odd pace. It's too fast to pick up on character nuance and too slow to generate any suspense. Crooked House serves up an entire mansion full of suspects, all of whom appear equally guilty and equally innocent. Director Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah's Key, Dark Places) seems more intent on trying to build a mystery than on building a world populated by characters. Everyone seems placed like a puzzle piece, rather than organically occupying a living space. The novel was adapted for BBC Radio 4 in four weekly 30-minute episodes which began broadcasting on 29 February 2008.

Doug Mills of the Times got the award for visual journalism for a striking photo of Biden, and the award for courage and accountability went to The Washington Post for coverage on the impact of assault rifles and mass shootings. “I am killing this dinner harder than Kristi Noem kills the puppies,” Friend said in his Trump voice, riffing off the news that the Republican governor of South Dakota, in a forthcoming book, admits to shooting her 14-month-old dog because she was “untrainable” and aggressive. The only Trump spotted at this year’s festivities was daughter-in-law Lara Trump, recently crowned co-chair of the Republican National Committee. Her father-in-law wasn’t in the building, but comic impressionist Matt Friend emerged from the crowd with a Trump impersonation — as well as sendups of Bernie Sanders, Mitch McConnell and Obama.

“The defeated former president [Trump] has made no secret of his attack on our democracy. He tells supporters he is the revenge and retribution,” Biden warned. Trump’s former Vice President Mike Pence has declined to back his onetime boss in the 2024 election cycle. Donald Trump on Sunday trashed the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after being mocked by President Biden and “Saturday Night Live” star Colin Jost at the annual event. Towards the end of the Second World War, Charles Hayward is in Cairo and falls in love with Sophia Leonides, a smart, successful Englishwoman who works for the Foreign Office.

His second wife is the indolent Brenda, decades his junior, suspected of having a clandestine love affair with Laurence, the grandchildren's tutor. After Aristide is poisoned by his own eye medicine (eserine), his granddaughter Sophia tells narrator and fiancé Charles Hayward that they cannot marry until the killer is apprehended. Charles's father, "The Old Man", is Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard, so Charles investigates from the inside along with assigned detective Chief Inspector Taverner.

Screenwriter Julian Fellowes has done far better (Gosford Park, Downton Abbey); Crooked House is just a lazy weekend in a big house with people no one would ever give a hoot about in real life. There are brief glimmers of flair and technique scattered throughout the film, such as an impressive performance by the young Honor Kneafsey as the mischievous Josephine and a well-blocked dinner scene that allows for amusing familial sniping. Yet, “Crooked House” is a bored and boring adaptation of a Christie tale that demands a stronger hand and a taste for mirth amidst the morbidity.

It all feels muddled in translation by people who clearly have reverence for Christie’s talents but don’t quite understand what makes her work sing. Her nanny prepares hot chocolate for her and dies after Josephine refuses it and she drinks it herself. Again, Josephine refuses, even when Charles warns her that she is in danger. Edith is diagnosed with a fatal illness, and is told she has only months to live. The younger son, Roger, is managing director of a major family business, but is a failure who has required multiple bail-outs. His domineering wife Clemency is a plant biologist with extensive knowledge of poisons.

Unlike “Orient Express,” however, the inspector in this case is nowhere near as shrewd as Poirot. Played by the handsomely bland Max Irons, Charles Hayward is a former spy turned private eye named who had a brief fling in Cairo some years earlier with Sophia, and whose faint connection to the family might have something to do with his having been chosen to investigate the case. Max Irons plays the young private eye Charles Hayward, who gets a visit in his dingy office from the beautiful Sophia (Stefanie Martini), an old love whose grandfather, an unpopular tycoon, has shuffled off this mortal coil under unusual circumstances. After consulting with the vinegary Scotland Yard hand Chief Inspector Taverner (Terence Stamp, always welcome), Charles sets out to the estate, filled with aunts, sons, in-laws and others, embodied by an all-star cast including Glenn Close, Julian Sands, Gillian Anderson and Christina Hendricks. Ms. Hendricks, her distinctive red hair here a vermilion that borders on magenta, plays an ex-showgirl who is the last wife of the dead old man. The obvious suspects are Brenda Leonides, Aristide's much younger second wife, and Laurence Brown, a conscientious objector who has been living in the house as private tutor to Sophia's younger brother and sister, Eustace and Josephine.

Mr. Trump, who had privately discussed the idea of Mr. Kennedy as a running mate, echoed what Democrats have been saying for months about Mr. Kennedy’s candidacy — that it could swing the election. The former president called Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a ‘Democrat plant’ and attacked his running mate, Nicole Shanahan, who gave $2 million to the Kennedy campaign. A Marist poll released the day before showed the elder politician up by three points among more than 1,000 registered voters surveyed and a full six points among those who said they will definitely vote this November.

On the same day of the incident with Ingram's, local news channel WSOC-TV released an investigation into predatory towing and booting practices in the area. In one case, WSOC-TV documented a passenger vehicle driver being threatened with a gun after paying $180 to get one boot off, only to find out they had to pay again to get a second boot removed. Another local outlet, WBTV, reported in October 2022 that despite a company being "practically banned" from towing by a number of lawsuits and court injunctions, the company continued to tow hundreds of vehicles. A rep of the BP franchise where the towing took place said that Ingram had not operated in a predatory way, and that the Instagram video had led to racist comments directed at his operation.

BP's corporate office declined to say if they offered guidance to franchise locations on towing and impound services. BP recently closed on a deal to acquire the TA brand, and will soon oversee hundreds of truck stops across America. The North Carolina chapter of the Public Interest Research Group, a consumer advocacy group, has called for stricter laws regulating towing companies in the state, as have all of the victims in the above mentioned stories.

Sometimes, however, even legally parked vehicles get hit by towing and booting outfits. William Ingram, owner of the tow company in this case, maintains his business operates legitimately, though he refused to explain how he arrived at the $6,000 price tag. Instead, he told us to contact several other area tow companies and ask what they would charge for a similar service. If you have had any experiences with what you'd consider predatory towing practices, contact [email protected]. None of the competitor companies Ingram suggested said they'd charge anything close to $6,000 for a short tow and impound, citing figures from $750 to $4,500 in situations that required hours of extensive vehicle recovery.

When morning came, and Kruzhinskiy and company noticed the truck was gone, they spent all day pleading with Ingram's to lower the price, or at least to accept something besides cash. Kruzhinskiy filmed the encounter in what's now become a notorious, viral video viewed hundreds of thousands of times on various channels. "The driver went inside of the station to purchase two sodas," Richmond wrote on a website he maintains. He stressed that these inflated prices now may be the norm, and that drivers must do what they can to avoid illegal parking.

The tow was just about 16 miles from the BP to Ingram's impound lot. Kruzhinskiy and his friend needed $6,000, firm, to get the truck or face a $100-per-day storage charge, he said. In the wee hours of Thursday, May 11, small fleet owner and the admin of the popular USA_Transportation Instagram page Bogdan Kruzhinskiy was celebrating his 30th birthday and a friend's recent graduation when, unbeknownst to them, their friend's 2015 Volvo was being towed from a nearby truck stop. With Charlotte Towing & Recovery in charge, you have a dedicated pit crew for all your roadside service towing needs. From there, Richmond said the armed tow operator flashed a badge, claimed he was law enforcement, and demanded $272 to let the vehicle go, and even after that, they were charged an additional $2,700 when A1 towed the truck anyway. One day later, Burton hosted another Instagram Live video where another driver, this one in New York, said he'd been charged $5,700 for a tow.

After going down in flames online and being dogged by hundreds of comments ranging from critical to angry and hateful, Ingram joined trucking social media personality and mentor Alix Burton, known as Alix Good Energy on Instagram, for a live discussion of the event. "He said with the universal keys, [Ingram] can get into any truck in Charlotte... Is that even legal? There's so much gray areas in the towing business, and in order for us to fight this we'd have to file a civil suit," said Kruzhinskiy. "The president believes that forcibly taking over a building on campus is absolutely the wrong approach. That is not an example of peaceful protests," Kirby said at a briefing. ∎ Muslim leaders are condemning police removing the hijab from a woman who was arrested Saturday during demonstrations at Arizona State University, the Arizona Republic reported. The school said it's looking into the incident, which is regarded as a privacy violation for Muslim women. “We’re trapped in a dorm,” student organizer Mohammad Hemeida wrote in a message to a USA TODAY reporter at the scene. A video he shared depicted police in helmets and nightsticks closing in on protesters. Customers with electrically powered medical equipment can apply for lower rates through the Medical Baseline Program, Gallagher said.

Energy saving

Adams had issued a stern warning earlier in the day that students at an encampment needed to leave right away – and advised their parents to urge them to do so – saying “external actors’’ have taken over the pro-Palestinian protest and must be removed. Southern California Gas serves the vast majority of people living in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties. The main exception is in Long Beach, where the city’s Energy Resources Department provides gas service. Unrivaled but approachable, The Gas House is unlike any restaurant in Fort Wayne.

University threatens to expel students occupying building

The student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, reported student protesters replaced an American flag that flew on a large pole in the university’s Polk Place courtyard with a Palestinian flag, which police later took down. Columbia severely restricted access to campus Tuesday after demonstrators seized an academic building and blocked the entrance with a human chain. The school also suspended graduate student Mahmoud Khalil, lead negotiator for Columbia University Apartheid Divest in talks with the administration that have failed to resolve the crisis. "At this hour, the NYPD is massing on barricaded streets outside the gates of Columbia University. Columbia faculty have spent the day offering our help to defuse the situation on Columbia’s campus and have been rebuffed or ignored," the statement said.

Cardona said the Education Department has more than 100 pending civil rights probes investigating allegations of discrimination, including antisemitic and anti-Muslim harassment. Schumer − the highest-ranking Jewish official in American history − called last month for Israel to hold new elections. It was at the time the sharpest criticism yet from a top Democrat of Netanyahu's government and prompted blowback from Israeli officials and Republican lawmakers. He added it is "unacceptable" for students to be targeted for being Jewish or for protests to glorify "the murderous and hateful Hamas or the violence of Oct. 7." “This is about responding to the actions of the protesters, not their cause,” Chang said. Students with dorms on campus asked security guards at checkpoints whether they would be allowed back in if they left, and some faculty members complained they could not access campus Tuesday afternoon.

The student encampment, in the center of campus, still remained Tuesday afternoon. Low-income Edison customers have access to several discounts, including the CARE program, which cuts Edison’s rates by 30%, and the Family Electric Rate Assistance program, which cuts them by 18%, Gallagher said. The utility also offers eligible customers one-time grants of as much as $300 from the Energy Assistance Fund, although those are available only to homes powered entirely by electricity. Police dismantled an encampment and dispersed protesters at the University of Utah late Monday after a rally that drew more than 300 people outside an administration building at the campus in Salt Lake City. Officers removed and dismantled about a dozen tents, stashes of water bottles, food and toilet paper as some protesters took down their own tents and drove away, the school said in a statement.

End the siege of Columbia now.”At one point, someone waved a large Palestinian flag from the top of Hamilton Hall. These include the California Alternate Rates for Energy program, which lowers natural gas rates by 20% for qualified households. You’re eligible if you’re enrolled in a safety-net program such as Medi-Cal or CalFresh, or if your income is no more than roughly twice the federal poverty level (for example, a maximum of $46,060 for a family of three). Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, California, said Tuesday its campus will be closed until May 10 after law enforcement began "a series of actions to restore order." Two buildings were cleared and secured and 35 people arrested, the school said in a statement. "We regret that protesters have chosen to escalate the situation through their actions," the statement said.

Helios House: Futuristic Gas Station

Within minutes of the assault on the building, Columbia University officials said they had no choice but to request police intervention. Energy Resources’ website also offers energy-saving tips, even breaking them down by month, and a list of steps (many of them do-it-yourself ones) to reduce your home’s gas use. If you’re buying something to improve the energy efficiency of your Southern California home, there’s likely to be a government rebate to cut the cost. Hale House is a Queen Anne style Victorian mansion built in 1887 in the Highland Park section of northeast Los Angeles, California. It has been described as "the most photographed house in the entire city", and "the most elaborately decorated".[2] In 1966, it was declared a Historic-Cultural Monument, and in 1972 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was relocated in 1970 to the Heritage Square Museum in Montecito Heights where it remains open to the public.

The protesters also want the U.S. to stop supplying funding and weapons to the war effort. Columbia, like many schools, will likely settle its civil rights case with the department. In recent days, Republican lawmakers have floated the idea of pulling the university’s federal funding for failing to comply with federal anti-discrimination laws. White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said in a statement that Biden has always condemned "repugnant, antisemitic smears and violent rhetoric," adding that Biden respects freedom of expression but believes protests must be lawful. "Forcibly taking over buildings is not peaceful, it is wrong. And hate speech and hate symbols have no place in America," Bates said.

Columbia protesters rally inside and outside gates

More recently, amnesty for students and professors involved in the protests has become an issue. Protesters want protections amid threats of disciplinary action and termination for those participating in demonstrations that violate campus policy or local laws. "The situation we are seeing on our campus and dozens of other campuses around the country stem from decades of decisions by administrators that have slowly eroded campus climate," Cohen said. He said students have a right to protest and to say things he does not agree with.

"Looking at the Palestinians in Gaza and students in Gaza that lost their universities, their lives and their families,'' she said. "A degree would not matter to us as much as a liberated Palestine." Blocks surrounding Columbia's campus in Manhattan were a maze of metal barricades Tuesday afternoon as the administration’s closure of campus dragged on. The White House on Tuesday condemned the surge in protests that seize and occupy university buildings, which includes not only Columbia but also Cal Poly Humboldt in Northern California, where an occupation was broken up Tuesday. The Columbia University Apartheid Divestment group said Tuesday afternoon that negotiations between administrators and the approximately 60 protesters in a campus building have stalled. A huge deployment of officers from the New York Police Department’s Strategic Response Group descended just outside the Columbia campus by late afternoon, a clear indication of law enforcement action to come.

And like SoCalGas, Edison and the DWP offer a bevy of energy-saving programs, including rebates for energy-efficient home improvements. The program shifts expenses from the winter to the summer, when people use far less gas. You’ll still pay the same amount over the course of 2023, but the bills won’t be so high now or so low in the summer. Rayyan Kilani, 21, who is graduating this semester from the American University of Beirut, said students had decided it was worth risking their degrees to show support for the embattled people of Gaza.

But he urged schools to "uphold your codes of conduct, enforce your rules and hold students who violate them responsible in real and consequential ways." Pro-Palestinian demonstrators are worried about the university calling riot police to Hamilton Hall after protesters seized the building overnight, the student group said. Palestinian students, including a student-appointed negotiator, have been temporarily suspended in the past 12 hours, CUAD said. The group also said Columbia tracked which students swiped into a campus library during a certain timeframe as a way to identify student protesters. A university administrator led dozens of police officers to the site of a pro-Palestinian demonstration, where students linked arms and encircled the flagpole, video and photos posted online by the Daily Tar Heel show. "Sadly, this dangerous decision followed more than a week of what had been productive discussions" with student protesters, they said.

While you may be more concerned with square footage than therms, understanding whether your home has natural gas should be a major part of your purchasing decision. After all, natural gas is a clean burning, efficient energy source that fuels your home appliances – all while providing cost savings to your energy bills. Earlier in the day, dozens of protesters were detained as police began breaking down the "Triangle Gaza Solidarity Encampment" after school officials demanded demonstrators remove the tents and leave the area.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill canceled classes Tuesday afternoon, the last day of instruction in the spring semester, after police responded to a pro-Palestinian protest. ∎ Seventy-nine people were arrested in connection with a protest at the University of Texas, the Travis County sheriff’s office said Tuesday. Seventy-eight of those arrested were charged with criminal trespass, and one person received an additional charge of obstructing a highway or passageway. University leaders said they believe that the group that broke into and occupied the building was led by people not affiliated with the University.
