Kreacher's Tale Wikibooks, open books for an open world

However Hermione's kindness towards Kreacher eventually started to change his attitude towards her, and before going on his search for Mundungus Fletcher he gave her a little spasm, which was supposed to be a respectful salute. He was also courageous, leading the house elves into the fray during the battle of Hogwarts. Although Kreacher is supposed to take orders from the occupants of number twelve, Grimmauld Place, he has a deep dislike of the blood-traitor Weasley family. He mutters insults about the various occupants of the house under his breath, calling the group a bunch of Mudbloods, werewolves, traitors and thieves. When he is overheard by Fred, he freezes in his tracks and gives a very pronounced and unconvincing start of surprise, then bows to the boy. He appears convinced that they cannot hear him, and continues to insult the group.

Another brought Gnarlak a drink when he sat at a table with Newt Scamander and a third brought Gnarlak a document to sign, then scurried off with it. Another house-elf carried a crate of bottles and shouted the warning “MACUSA are coming! A house-elf named Dobby, who served the Malfoy family, took a more enlightened view than most. He desperately wanted to be free and eventually Harry Potter managed to trick Lucius Malfoy into giving Dobby an old sock. Dobby later went to work at Hogwarts, where he actually received payment for his labors (GF21). They hear and see things, as Dobby said (GF26) and can use their powerful magic and this information for doing bad (Kreacher), neutral (Winky) or good (Dobby).

Like Draco Malfoy, Regulus quickly learned that being a Death Eater required far more unpleasantness than he had ever imagined or could provide. Unable to escape with his life, Regulus instead devised the plan to steal what he clearly believed to be Voldemort's single Horcrux, certain he would be killed in the process, but dying in the belief that he had helped to thwart the Dark Lord. Harry awakens in the early hours, pondering the daunting task Albus Dumbledore gave him and the tales about Albus' young life. On the second landing, the room Ron and Harry previously used has been searched, presumably by Death Eaters. Sirius Black's room on the next floor has also been searched; amid the mess is a handwritten letter from his mother to Sirius thanking him for the toy broomstick he gave Harry for his first birthday.

The Riddikulus charm is used to combat Boggarts, by changing their appearance into a less fearsome or even comical apparition, which weakens the creatures. When Harry Potter approaches the boggart, it takes the form of a Dementor. From the death of the last black inhabitants, he was left alone until Sirius moved in. In 1926 New York there was a House-elf shining wands with a “feathery contraption” in the headquarters of MACUSA.

[1] He was also fiercely loyal to Regulus Black, for whom he fought in the Battle of Hogwarts along with many other house-elves. Kreacher eventually grew quite friendly towards Harry and company, especially after Harry gifted him the locket, and started cooking for them, cleaning the house, and reminding him to wash his hands before dinner. Thereafter Kreacher appears cleaner and happier, restores the house to pristine condition, and begins to treat Harry and his friends with courtesy and respect. When Grimmauld Place is infiltrated by Death Eaters, Harry decides against calling the elf back to them, fearing possible betrayal.

Kreacher left the kitchens of Hogwarts and devoted himself exclusively to the Potter family. At Christmas 2017, Kreacher was in charge of taking gifts from Albus, James, and Rose to Gryffindor Tower and prevent them from trying to open them early. Kreacher also advised the family to contact them through the Floo Network. A house-elf who served in the House of Black, Kreacher's loyalty to the Black family was absolute and undying.

They generally support Voldemort, who they think will give them a better life, since they are shunned by the wizard community and are both feared and hated by the common witch and wizard. In Goblet of Fire, it is said that a House-elf who has been freed is expected to find a new family to serve. There is an Office of House-Elf Relocation at the Ministry of Magic to facilitate this. House-elves are unendingly loyal to their masters; so much so that Dobby, who served the Malfoy family, attempts to punish himself each time he utters a negative remark about them (even after his freedom) until the final book, in which he defies Bellatrix Lestrange.

From the third book to the sixth, Crookshanks is Hermione Granger's pet cat. Crookshanks was purchased by Hermione in a shop called Magical Menagerie in the third Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Crookshanks resembles a Persian cat, and Rowling has described him as half-Kneazle,[32] an intelligent catlike creature sensitive to dishonesty, explaining his identification of the rat 'Scabbers' as Peter Pettigrew, and of Sirius Black in his dog form. Crookshanks is seen in Prisoner of Azkaban talking to Padfoot in the school grounds. After his original book, he occasionally makes minor appearances to cuddle up to his owner or Harry in the Gryffindor Common Room. Obscurials first came into notice when wizard-kind was persecuted by non-magical users.

Ministry of Magic Classification

The letter's second page is also missing, but the first one mentions Bathilda Bagshot, a famous wizard historian who often visits, and that Dumbledore borrowed James Potter's Invisibility Cloak. The letter ends halfway through Lily's sentence saying that she is, "surprised that Dumbledore..." Harry searches unsuccessfully for the second page. A veritable legion of house-elves were enlisted by Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to help out the entire school instead of serving one master. They also presumably moved trunks and baggage to and from rooms, cleaned dormitories, and presumably other areas of the castle as well. Despite the seemingly horrid lifestyle that house-elves endured, house-elves seemed to actually enjoy being enslaved. With few exceptions (Dobby being one of them), house-elves would feel insulted if their master attempted to pay them, give them pensions, or reward their service with anything except kindness.

He had a strong bond with Sirius' brother, Regulus Black and was devastated by his death. Kreacher was usually hostile, bitter and miserable and had a habit of insulting people, including his masters. He loathed taking orders from those he hated, often giving them a dirty look or a biting remark.

He was also fiercely loyal to Regulus Black, and later to Harry Potter whom he fought for in the Battle of Hogwarts alongside many other house-elves. Kreacher survived the final battle of the Second Wizarding War; it is unknown what happened to him later in life, though he died at some point after Albus Potter went to Hogwarts. Hagrid's love for animals gets him the teaching job for Care of Magical Creatures at Hogwarts beginning in Prisoner of Azkaban, following the retirement of the course's previous instructor. In their fourth year, Harry and his classmates take care of Hagrid's Blast-Ended Skrewts (a crustacean-like predator), one of which (grown to giant size) is placed in the hedge maze for the final task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Kreacher cannot disobey a direct order from Sirius, but performs the tasks he is set reluctantly and ungraciously. Sirius refuses to set Kreacher free, as the house-elf knows too much about the Order of the Phoenix, and says that Kreacher would take the news very badly in any case. As those in the drawing room attempt to clear it of unwanted items, Kreacher continues to try and smuggle items to safety, and mutters horrible curses every time he is caught.

Harry's disdain for Kreacher only grows when the Malfoys, allied with Voldemort use the house elf for their own gain. Ultimately, Kreacher betrays Sirius, who dies and leaves 12 Grimmauld Place — as well as Kreacher — to Harry in his will. Harry is obviously reluctant to take Kreacher on, but in Deathly Hallows, he discovers there's much more to Kreacher than meets the eye. When audiences and readers first meet Kreacher in the fifth Potter installment, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, there's no reason to suspect that he'll be a fan favorite. As Harry heads to 12 Grimmauld Place, the home of the Blacks — and the childhood home of his godfather and black sheep of the pureblood family, Sirius (Gary Oldman) — Harry is initially pretty disgusted by Kreacher.

In 1995, when Hermione Granger began hiding clothes in Gryffindor Tower in an attempt to free the house-elves of Hogwarts, the house-elves felt rather insulted, and everyone except Dobby refused to clean the Gryffindor common room in protest. "Of course, Voldemort would have considered the ways of house-elves far beneath his notice, just like all the purebloods who treat them like animals...It would never have occurred to him that they might have magic he didn't." Eventually, Kreacher helps Harry hunt for Voldemort's Horcruxes by telling him the story of his beloved master, Sirius' late brother Regulus. Though Regulus joined Voldemort's Death Eaters, he secretly tried to bring down the Dark Lord with Kreacher's help, and the two of them attempted to destroy one of the Horcruxes, an ancient locket, themselves.

You will be amazed how many people will stop to get a picture in front of the Black residence, but never look up to actually see Kreacher. Don’t forget to get a selfie with Kreacher, before you head into Diagon Alley. Nagini is Voldemort's huge familiar snake, introduced in Goblet of Fire.[51] In Indian mythology, a Nagini is a female serpent who occasionally takes human form. Voldemort made Nagini his final Horcrux by murdering Bertha Jorkins, while he was hiding in the forests of Albania.[14] Due to this connection, Voldemort has complete control over the snake, as Dumbledore mentions in Half-Blood Prince. According to Rowling, Fawkes is named after 17th-century conspirator Guy Fawkes.[41] Ray Fearon provided vocal effects for Fawkes in the Wizarding World film series Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts, also voicing the centaur Firenze in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. After Dumbledore's death in Half-Blood Prince, Fawkes is heard singing a lament and is not seen again.

JK Rowling reveals the fate of Kreacher the house elf – but is this Harry Potter canon?

Kreacher being able to easily Apparate in and out of Voldemort's highly secure sea cave demonstrates how Elf magic differs from wizard magic. This ability, which we have now seen several times in Hogwarts, will be seen again in a later chapter when Dobby rescues the imprisoned Trio and several others by Apparating into a magically protected area. This ability also underscores a major weakness in Voldemort—a failure to consider that anyone he considers inferior could actually be more powerful magically. Originating in the southern areas, one specific legend about farfadets is that they were "wrinkled, brown-skinned midgets who went around either naked or wearing dirty rags", a description that is almost identical to Rowling's elves. The Farfadets would help around a farming home, completing tasks not done in the day by the human servants.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

After her death, however, Sirius Black became Kreacher's master, despite having been considered a blood traitor and disowned from his family. Kreacher was hostile to Sirius and to the entire Order of the Phoenix when they used 12 Grimmauld Place as their Headquarters, but was forced to serve Sirius. He was known to steal Black family heirlooms during the Order's cleaning efforts and hide them in his den in the kitchen cupboard. In turn, Sirius took the items and threw them away, and berated Kreacher in harsh and cruel words. Regulus drank the potion himself and ordered Kreacher to switch Slytherin's Locket with a fake locket and then go home and destroy the "real" locket, leaving Regulus to die in the cave.

J. K. Rowling

Harry calls Kreacher the house-elf, and Kreacher reveals that while he took the locket, it was then stolen from him by Mundungus Fletcher. Harry then asks Kreacher to find Mundungus and bring him to Grimmauld Place, and wins Kreacher’s loyalty by giving him the false locket for his own. When Hermione discovered that Kreacher's master had been killed during his and Kreacher's mission to retrieve one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, she tried to comfort him with a hug but Kreacher appeared revolted.

It is a fair supposition that he used the House-elf form of Apparition to do so, and perhaps it is just something that he naturally does and it therefore lacks a name. We already have seen that House-elves can Apparate within Hogwarts, where the school's protective charms normally prevent Apparition. Voldemort has presumably prevented Apparition in the Horcrux cave to force any would-be thieves into running the gantlet of the lake and the Inferi. Equally, however, he clearly has failed to prevent House-elves from Apparating in the cave. Whether this is an oversight on Voldemort's part, which would support the readers' belief in his discounting non-Human magic, or whether it is simply impossible for human spell-casters to prevent Elf Apparition, is unknown.

Death (Post-

When he was passed down to Sirius, Harry’s godfather hated Kreacher, because the house-elf reminded him of his unhappy upbringing; and Kreacher hated Sirius in return, because he had never shown him kindness for his hard work. Kreacher says Mundungus Fletcher stole the locket; he also tells them that when Voldemort required a House-elf, his master, Regulus Black, gave him Kreacher. At a lake inside a cave, Voldemort forced Kreacher to drink a potion from a basin that made him think horrible thoughts.

Kreacher Quotes in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry first encounters dementors during his third year of school, when they are sent to guard Hogwarts against Sirius Black, thought to be a dangerous criminal at this point in time. Being reminded by their presence of his parents' murder by Voldemort, Harry asks Remus Lupin for assistance, and thus learns the Patronus Charm. By the novel's end, the dementors of Azkaban stage a mass revolt against their employers to join Voldemort, who permits them nearly free access to victims. In Deathly Hallows, the Ministry, under the control of Voldemort, uses dementors to punish Muggle-borns.

Harry immediately wants to go to Godric's Hollow, not only to meet Bathilda and learn more about Dumbledore and his family from her, but also to see his birthplace. Hermione vetoes this, arguing that it is unrelated to their mission, too dangerous, and she suspects Voldemort may have set a trap there. Hermione instead encourages Harry to trust his own feelings and memories about Dumbledore, rather than believing malicious rumors and unsubstantiated innuendos spread by Ron's Aunt Muriel, Rita Skeeter, and others. Harry, though still upset by Kreacher's part in Sirius' death, is bothered more by Voldemort exploiting Kreacher.

Throughout the seven main books of the series, Harry and his friends encounter many of these creatures on their adventures in Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest, or other locations throughout the Wizarding World. In addition, students learn to take care of creatures such as hippogriffs and unicorns in the Care of Magical Creatures class at Hogwarts. Rowling has also written Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a guide to the magical beasts found in the series, and based on the fictional textbook of the same name written by Newt Scamander and used by students at Hogwarts. Kreacher was first introduced to Harry at number twelve, Grimmauld Place, Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. He was house-elf to the Black family, and was left to Harry after Sirius’s death. Despite his disrespect of Muggle-born wizards, he still earnt the respect of Hermione Granger, who became an activist for house-elves through her organisation S.P.E.W. (Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare).

He first appears towards the end of Philosopher's Stone, in which he rescues Harry from Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. Having carried Harry to safety on his back, Firenze quarrels with other centaurs who object to the symbolic suggestion that centaurs are subservient to humans. This creature performs household chores and is kind to children,[36] as is the character in the series.

When Sirius wrestles a large golden ring bearing the Black crest from him, Kreacher bursts into furious tears and leaves the room sobbing, cursing Sirius as he leaves. Kreacher isn't as devoted to the memory of Orion Black, Sirius's father, as he is to Walburga Black, Sirius's mother, but was caught hoarding a pair of Orion's old trousers the previous week. Unlike Regulus, Sirius was horrible to Kreacher, treating him as though he was not worth anything, but also ordering him about. Sirius' behaviour originated from his hatred of his family and the house of Black itself. Kreacher hated Sirius, because of his cruel attitude towards him, and he betrayed Sirius to Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy which resulted in Sirius' death.

The host and parasite may retake the form of the child later, again with almost no input from the obscurial. Due to its consuming nature, obscurials rarely live past childhood, and obscurials who do make it to adolescence are considered outstandingly powerful magic users, though they still will have no control. Despite their attachment to human emotion, dementors seem to have difficulty distinguishing one human from another, as demonstrated by Barty Crouch Jr.'s escape from Azkaban, wherein they could detect no emotional difference between the younger Crouch and his mother. Their sensitivity appears less precise in proportion to the emotion's 'complexity'; this particular weakness enabled Sirius Black, an Animagus, to escape Azkaban by transforming into a dog. The principal method against them is the Patronus Charm, which both protects its user and repels the dementors. The basilisk's fangs and her venom absorbed by the sword of Gryffindor proved instrumental for destroying most of Voldemort's Horcruxes.

The potion, (the same one Dumbledore drank) caused Kreacher to have nightmarish delusions, intense stomach pains and made him dehydrated. Voldemort then left, leaving Kreacher to drink from the lake (as any water conjured evaporates) and die at the hands of the Inferi. The Harry Potter franchise is full of magical creatures, from dragons to hippogriffs to house-elves, but one particular house elf is emerging as a new fan favorite. To Kreacher’s horror, Sirius left all his belongings to Harry in his will, so Harry is Kreacher’s master now (HBP3). Rather than deal with him on a daily basis, Harry commanded Kreacher to work at Hogwarts, although Harry is still Kreacher’s master (HBP19).

Showing respect in the house of the dead: Australian museum removes mummified human remains

house of the typing dead

Amidst this barrage, the plot makes both more, and less, sense. It’s a sort of void swirling with biceps and shotguns, hordes of faceless zombies, forgettable action movie set pieces of hospital, train, and military bunker. You are an agent from an amorphous government agency made real only by the fact that you have badges that represents it. The Pinball of the Dead is a pinball game released for the Game Boy Advance. Tables, bosses and enemy designs are derived from The House of the Dead 2. But The Typing of the Dead isn’t just a silly, superficial game.

She adds that the foot in the biscuit tin was donated to the museum before the 1960s. Somewhat gruesome objects of that nature were bought as souvenirs by travellers to Egypt. The 3D visualisations generated from scans of these objects are also on display. The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return is a re-release of The House of the Dead 2 and III for the Wii.

Kill Screen – Previously

It was a day like any other — the day my home was engulfed by fire. No one on earth or above asked me if I was ready for the shoulder shake. The morning started with a buzzy, two-minute car ride to my daughter’s school. It ended with us — me, my husband, our then 4-year old and 1-year-old — sharing a queen-size bed at my in-law’s house. I spent the night gasping for air while on my husband’s phone with my friends and family. A by-the-numbers video visit from Steve Kornaki explained how many people were in the ballroom, how how many potatoes were consumed and how much scholarship money was being handed out by the WHCA this year.

Even if you did, you were in trouble, I’ve seen a professional typist virtually brought to tears by the game. The first among these was The Typing of the Dead 2003 for the PC, which still used the The House of the Dead 2 engine. This version introduced Master Mode, which included new challenges, and VS Expert Mode, where players could compete against opponents whose skills are taken from the top players across the country. This unlockable mode pits the player against one of several AI controlled players in a single chapter of the game.

Some people in the Steam community have reported problems booting the game initially, but it seems a small problem that the developers have reassured me that they are fixing. Otherwise, this is a fairly solidly made, bug-free adaptation. For all the qualities of Mavis, though, hers was a fairly by the numbers, playing things straight typing tutorial (albeit mixing in a few fairly tame games over time). The catalyst for the project appeared to lie with Sega WOW, later WOW Entertainment, an in-house division of the Sega company that was spun into a semi-independent entity, and then spun back again a few years later. It came up with the idea of an arcade cabinet laden with a QWERTY keyboard, taking the House of the Dead game and adding an educational angle to it. It sounded an odd plan, and certainly when Typing of the Dead arrived in Japanese arcades in 1999, there were many who would still have regarded it as such.

Zombie Revenge (

Also, some of the zombie noises were recycled from the first House of the Dead game. Several spin-offs to the mainstream storyline have also been produced, including a virtual pinball game, an English tutorial and a typing tutorial — as well as a film trilogy. In addition, select enemy characters appearing in the first two games were adapted into fully articulated action figures by Palisades Toys, which canceled the second toy line before street release due to limited returns from the first series. It’s also also a shame that there still no point to saving any of the innocent survivors, whereas succeeding or failing to do so would open different parts of each level in the first Typing of the Dead. Here it’s just for points, so unless you are into leaderboards, it’s going to be a massive downgrade. Now that the different routes are gone, it also becomes more obvious that typing isn’t really that much of an engaging form of gameplay and boredom became quite frequent.

If the player successfully rescued civilians from the zombies, the civilian would sometimes reward the player with an extra life. In the third game, occasionally the player's partner would get in trouble and the player would be rewarded if he or she saved the partner's life. Players can also obtain extra lives by shooting boxes, crates, vases and destructible scenery. Scarlet Dawn once again features the civilians from the first two games, alongside the partner rescue mechanics from the third game, alongside new mechanics such as weapon switching and quick time events.

It balances its overt silliness with an honestly taxing difficulty. And this real challenge, combined with the excellent presentation, variety of gamplay, fast pace and sheer novelty, make The Typing of the Dead worth playing, again and again. While the survey found that 79% of respondents had no issue with seeing human remains on display in museums, there were important caveats. These included that any remains on display should not be within one or two generations of museum visitors. Its hands-off approach to teaching seems appropriate since this game waves its M rating around with all subtlety of a slow-motion headshot. Dismemberment, disrobing, disinterment, and disregard for social progress is the norm here.

Big zombies needed lots of blasts to kill (thus, long words, and occasional sentences), smaller ones could be flicked away with a mere Z. But before it petered out, it took one of the strangest left turns in video gaming history (I don’t say that lightly), as House of the Dead became the best typing tutor game ever created. One spun out of a title ostensibly about blasting zombies and pretending to give two hoots about the plot.

Power-ups, rankings, typing ability tracking, and unlockables are a few examples of what this mode has to offer. The player can either play a short demo of the game or play through the game from start to finish in the same manner as the arcade port. It's also funny to see the characters running around with fold out keyboards.

Given a limited theatrical release with the intent of becoming a cult film, it served as a loose prequel to the game, but received very poor reviews and little box office return. The first special aspect of The Typing of the Dead is its potent silliness. Sometimes zombos will lob stuff at you, requiring you to hit a single letter to knock it out of the air. This can be quite annoying if you've already started typing a phrase such as the Father Ted classic 'Down with this sort of thing', but you can also cancel halfway through a phrase if you pay attention to which button that is (I didn't).

For Murphy, opening the second location is a tribute in ways to his grandmother, Helen (Murphy) Achenbach, who opened the original shop in 1983 and passed away this past summer. The owner is also eyeing the integration of delivery apps like DoorDash and GrubHub to serve the Newark area, although that is not yet operational. Buzz about the new location has Murphy excited, as the public have been peeking in the windows and knocking on the door for the last few weeks. On the Helen's Sausage House Facebook page on Tuesday, Murphy posted his thoughts about his grandmother. Murphy's son Clifford J. Murphy III, Helen's grandson, has since taken over the family business. He plans to open a second Helen's this fall on Main Street in downtown Newark.

Biden roasts Trump seriously at White House correspondents dinner

crooked house movie

Instead, we have another middling entry in the Christie film canon. Maybe someone else will take another stab at it in the near future. Other irritating elements pervade “Crooked House,” such as sloppy editing and an obnoxious score, but the film’s greatest sin is that the actual mystery never gains urgency or weight. It’s difficult to assign singular blame for such an issue—it’s possible that the script let the actors down or vice versa, or the direction failed to amplify the writing and the performances—but there’s nevertheless a void at the film’s center that cannot be ignored. Actors like Close and Anderson clearly relish playing their respective characters because they’re just generic enough to allow for unique interpretations, and yet the emotions on display never transcend their broad outlines. Paquet-Brenner disperses new information at a reasonable clip, but no piece of evidence feels even marginally significant, even as misdirection.

Cast & Crew

According to a Morning Consult poll of nearly 10,000 registered voters released last Tuesday and taken in the days after the first trial of a former U.S. president began, Biden slipped ahead of his Republican rival by a single point to lead 44% to 43%, a 3-point swing from just one week earlier. The CNN survey is at odds with other recent polling, which has shown Trump and Biden neck-and-neck as Trump’s support slips among independent voters in any race including former Democrat turned Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “Even Biden’s strongest issue approval ratings in the poll are also in negative territory, with 45% approving of his handling of health care policy and 44% approving his handling of student loan debt. And his worst issue approval rating – for his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza – yields 28% approval to 71% disapproval, including an 81% disapproval mark among those younger than 35 and majority disapproval among Democrats,” Agiesta wrote.

Unlike “Orient Express,” however, the inspector in this case is nowhere near as shrewd as Poirot. Played by the handsomely bland Max Irons, Charles Hayward is a former spy turned private eye named who had a brief fling in Cairo some years earlier with Sophia, and whose faint connection to the family might have something to do with his having been chosen to investigate the case. Max Irons plays the young private eye Charles Hayward, who gets a visit in his dingy office from the beautiful Sophia (Stefanie Martini), an old love whose grandfather, an unpopular tycoon, has shuffled off this mortal coil under unusual circumstances. After consulting with the vinegary Scotland Yard hand Chief Inspector Taverner (Terence Stamp, always welcome), Charles sets out to the estate, filled with aunts, sons, in-laws and others, embodied by an all-star cast including Glenn Close, Julian Sands, Gillian Anderson and Christina Hendricks. Ms. Hendricks, her distinctive red hair here a vermilion that borders on magenta, plays an ex-showgirl who is the last wife of the dead old man. The obvious suspects are Brenda Leonides, Aristide's much younger second wife, and Laurence Brown, a conscientious objector who has been living in the house as private tutor to Sophia's younger brother and sister, Eustace and Josephine.

Trump trashes ‘absolute disaster’ White House Correspondents’ Dinner, takes jabs at Colin Jost

Based on an Agatha Christie novel (reportedly one of her own favorites), this mystery is beautifully shot, with great set design, but it suffers from its odd pace. It's too fast to pick up on character nuance and too slow to generate any suspense. Crooked House serves up an entire mansion full of suspects, all of whom appear equally guilty and equally innocent. Director Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah's Key, Dark Places) seems more intent on trying to build a mystery than on building a world populated by characters. Everyone seems placed like a puzzle piece, rather than organically occupying a living space. The novel was adapted for BBC Radio 4 in four weekly 30-minute episodes which began broadcasting on 29 February 2008.

News in language

It starred Rory Kinnear (Charles Hayward), Anna Maxwell Martin (Sophia Leonides), and Phil Davis (Chief Insp. Taverner). The radio play was dramatised by Joy Wilkinson and directed by Sam Hoyle. The title refers to a nursery rhyme ("There Was a Crooked Man"), a common theme of the author. Narrator Charles's fiancée Sophia says it refers not to dishonesty, but rather "we hadn't been able to grow up independent... twisted and twining", meaning unhealthily interdependent on the intensely strong personality of the family patriarch, Aristide Leonides. He searches Edith's garden shed, and finds a bottle of cyanide; also Josephine's missing notebook, buried in quicklime. Taverner arrives to take over the case; he feels Charles's history with Sophia compromises him.

Paquet-Brenner and his two co-writers (including “Gosford Park” screenwriter Julian Fellowes) handle the whodunit reveal at the end fairly well, despite its haphazard staging, but it’s an interminable journey to reach that end point. It’s utterly baffling that the film spends so much time teeing up Hayward’s backstory only to effectively render it irrelevant in the face of the central mystery (I assume this works better on the page). It’s a more understandable decision to foreground the romance between Hayward and Haviland, given that it’s the story’s catalyst and it presents a potential conflict of interest between investigator and suspect, but Irons and Martini have almost no chemistry to speak of and the film conveniently forgets their relationship for long stretches. Contrived tensions between Hayward and Scotland Yard are similarly peppered in for little reason at all. In a series of posts on his Truth Social media platform on Friday night, Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, took aim at both Mr. Kennedy and his running mate, Nicole Shanahan, a wealthy Silicon Valley lawyer and investor.

On media pages

Officially, the evening is nonpartisan, and the only toast of the night goes to the sitting president, regardless of party affiliation. Unofficially, the dinner has always been perceived as a hotbed of Washington elites who lean left, regardless of media affiliation. But the president soon dispensed with the yuks and pivoted to what felt like a stump speech about the clear and present danger posed by Trump and his movement. He called on the journalists in the room to report “truth over lies.” He implored them to move past the election horse race stories and focus on American democracy. Certainly Christie's skill comes into play during the final act, as the discovery becomes imminent and the disparate clues that have been scattered about begin to make sense, but until then, it's a thinly spread mess. The movie spends a great deal of time on the history between the detective and young Josephine, but it amounts to almost nothing; it's padding.

Roger's younger brother, Philip, has suffered under his father's preference for Roger, and retreated into a distant world of books and bygone historical epochs, spending all his waking hours in the library. Philip's wife Magda is an only moderately successful actress to whom everything, even a family murder, is a stage show in which she wants to play a leading part. His twelve-year-old sister Josephine, on the other hand, is ugly, precociously intelligent, and obsessed with detective stories. She spies continually on the rest of the household, letting everyone know that she is writing down her observations in a secret notebook. He was a frequent subject of the roasts by both Biden and the keynote comedians. Some attendees were followed by tight circles of protesters yelling “Shame! Gosling has previously proven his versatility as a comedic actor in Barbie and The Nice Guys, and it's gratifying to see one of the biggest film stars of our time play an underdog. They are rumoured to have been carrying on an illicit love affair under old Leonides's nose. The family members hope these two prove to be the murderers because they despise Brenda as a gold digger and also hope to escape the scandal that a different outcome would bring.
